1490 PTO Casing Removal

Hi,

My 1490 is leaking oil around the PTO shaft so I wanted to take it apart to replace the two seals in the PTO housing. The service manual doesn't cover just replacing the seals but has instructions on removing the whole housing from the rear end.

Does anyone know if it's possible to just remove the casing cover that the PTO shield attaches to replace the seals that way instead of removing the whole thing. I have removed the reversible PTO, shield, and all the little bolts around the casing cover but I can't seem to break the cover free. Also, would anything bad happen if I took it apart without engaging the PTO lever. The manual says to engage the PTO lever.

Thanks

If you have removed all the 'little bolts' the it should come out, it could be the dowl and the sealant on the gasket is holding it. If you put the shaft back in you will have something to hold onto. You can break the hold by either breaking the joint by tapping in a screwdriver or narrow chisel, putting a tube over the pto shaft and lever on it may also do it . You can do all the repairs without removing the whole PTO housing the only tricky bit is holding the input/top shaft on re-assembly. But that is easier than the rave of removing the complete unit. The only time I have found it necessary to tie the PTO in gear is when you split the tractor at the clutch but for piece of mind you may as well do so.

If there is a pressure sensor below the PTO box, remember to remove that first, too. Many have forgotten that and caused extra trouble.

1490's have front mounted pumps, erkki.

Thanks all. That is a big help. I'll have a go at it tonight.
