hi everyone,
i already no that my 1490 2WD has 85 hp and i was wondering if this was enough to power a taarup 306 mower conditioner and not cause any damage to the tractor.
cheers

Josh.
The1490 engine is rated at 83bhp at 2200 rpm. The PTO hp output is 75.7hp at 2050 engine rpm in both 1000 and 540 speed. To determine whether your tractor is man enough to drive the mower you should look at the mower specs to determine its power requirement. Remember also to take into consideration the density of the crop and the highest gear and ground speed that you will be able to operate the tractor. I reckon the tractor will drive it with no problem but in using a machine that requires a fair bit of power make sure that the tractor has sufficient water in the radiator and the engine and gearbox/backaxle oil is up to the mark on the dip-stick, we always used to service our tractors before the summer, new oil, water and filters. All this helps to reduce the possibility of overheating problems which is the main cause of tractor damadge.

I know this is not an accurate analysis but on the Tarrup website they list the power requirements for their current trailed mowers. They quote 70HP for the 2.8 m, 80HP for the 3.2 and 90HP for the 3.6. If you scale this back for the 306 which is a 2.4 m mower, it would be approx 60 HP all things being equal. Going by this both the 1490 would be well capable of handling it and maybe even the 1390. However these figures are for the latest designs and may not apply to the older 306. If you ever definitively find out what the power is I'd like to know.

All figures given in the engine power data for the David Brown tractors are based on an average so every engine on all models may differ slightly, the only way to have a definitive answer as to what your engine/P.T.O is producing in horsepower would be to have it hooked up to a dynometer. On the machinery side, manufacturers base their figures of power requirement on feild tests but exactly how they come to a figure I am unsure. Of course, a tractor will only power a machine efficiently if used in the correct P.T.O speed, tractor ground speed and engine revs. You would most likeley find that your 1490, bearing in mind all this, would probably drive the larger machine ok. A lot of these large modern mowers suck the power in running them up to speed and not the actual mowing.

Josh On a video i got from DB shop it shows a 1490 mowing a heavy crop of grass with a tarrup mower conditioner with little problem.I think the video is volume 8 .I Have a friend who used to mow 120 acres with a International 784 and Tarrup 306 mower yearly .I think your db will have more power than the 784
